BCC Centennial Celebration

When I am sad, together we cry.
When I am happy, together we laugh.

Thank you. Here, I live, and am allowed to be.
A-ah… Here, being protected. A-ah…

Whenever I waiver, together we cross over.
Unrepeatable is this moment, truly precious is the moment.

Thank you. Now I live, and am allowed to be.
A-ah… Now, being within the Vow. A-ah…

I have composed a gatha commemorating BCC Centennial Celebration. I have been in Canada since 1997 and this occasion with Gomonshu-sama and Ourakata-sama will be one of the most memorable times in my life. Steveston Buddhist Choir will sing the gatha at the Chan Centre of the UBC on August 25th.

As you read this, sangha members will have spent the good part of Sunday the 19th cleaning the temple inside and out. It’s almost like watching an ant colony, as there is so much activity. Each person or team carrying out their tasks with practiced efficiency. There is much talk and good natured ribbing. The Fujinkai ladies prepare a tasty and much appreciated lunch. At the end of the day there are plenty of sore muscles. This pain is outweighed by a sense of accomplishment. The temple and grounds are now ready for Obon. I’d like to extend my thanks to all those who took part.

Women, men and children have been practicing traditional Japanese dance Mondays and Fridays for the last month. This is in preparation for The Obon festivities or Bon Odori. It’s wonderful to see such activity around the temple. I wish you all a safe and enjoyable summer.

The main focus for all the BC temples is the Centennial Celebration taking place at UBC August 25th. The response has been quite good with better than anticipated registration for BCJSBCF members. Please remember that the Sarana Affirmation will be held at 10:30 a.m. at Steveston Otera. Buses will leave the temple at 1:00 p.m. to take you to UBC. The same buses will leave UBC at about 9:30 p.m. to bring everyone back to the temple. You will be issued ticket/i.d. cards that are to be worn around your neck. This is for security. If you lose it, you don’t get into the events, no matter who you are. We are all looking forward to seeing the Gomonshu and Ourakata.

The Annual West Coast Buddhist Picnic will take place once again at Central Park in Burnaby. Steveston, Vancouver and Fraser Valley temples will be attending. I encourage as many people as possible to attend. Let’s get out there and car pool. It would be nice to see both seniors and young families taking part.

The Ryukoku Gakuin summer school program will be taking place at Steveston Temple this July/August. The students and their homestay families will be invited to above picnic again this year. The Socho with the aid of the local senseis and temple members are working hard to organize this event.

As we enter the month of June, the first of summer months, everything seems to start growing. I am sure Buddhist communities are busy in outdoor activities such as picnic or hiking and soon preparing for annual Obon Festival. Furthermore, our BCC Centennial is fast approaching.

On behalf of BCC, I would like to express my appreciation to the individuals and temples for the donations relating to Centennial. So far we have received $3,400.00.

Congratulations to the seven young people who applied for Hongwanji Youth Tour July 22 - Aug 2, 2005 led by Yasuo Izumi Sensei of BFA. They are Kirin Natsuhara from Vernon Buddhist Temple, Sachi Goto, Kenji Goto, Koji Goto, Tomo Shimizu, Julie Takasaki, Matthew Wakisaka from Toronto Buddhist Temple. Watch out the heat and have a good time in Japan.

Environmental awareness: UTSUKUSHII CHIKYUU MAMORUNOWA HITORI HITORINO KOKOROGAMAE. It’s each individual’s determination to protect our beautiful Earth.

For the past year, the Constitution Committee has been working to review the Steveston Buddhist Temple Constitution. After careful consideration of the existing constitution, which was prepared in the 1960’s, the committee decided to rewrite to suit the present goal and objectives rather than to update it.

Under the requirements of the Society’s Act, the Committee wishes give not less than 14 days official notice of adoption of the new Constitution as follows:

At a SPECIAL ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING on Monday, September 11, 2005 7:00 p.m. at the Steveston Buddhist Temple, the new Constitution will be formally adopted.

All members of the Temple are invited to attend. Copies of the new Constitution will be available at the Temple office for those wishing to review it.

FUJINKAI NEWS - Hiroko Yoshihara

Food Fair. This was a success with increased sales due to the hard work of both Fujinkai and Bukkyokai members. The variety of food offerings were pared down which lessened the work for the ladies and made for a more relaxing pace. With a stockpile of previous year’s Baiten items, we were able to have two tables of these items along with the more “garage sale” type treasures and a section of specialty Fujinkai items such as the 1990 souvenirs, Kamloops cookbooks, note cards and etc.

Aprons. As the men increase their presence in the kitchen, they would like aprons made for both themselves and the ladies. A simple bib design with large pockets in a sturdy fabric would be preferred. Do we have any sewers who can take this project on?

Toban Change. Toban 2 led by Mrs. Tomiko Sakai is now responsible for Fujinkai tasks from June to the end of September.

World Buddhist Women’s Convention in Hawaii, Sept. 2006. Indication of the number of Fujinkai members and spouses who would like to attend is needed by August 31. Please give some thought to going to this Convention as the locale is close by, beautiful and the event always inspires us. The fees do not have to be in until March 2006. Please contact Misaye Hamaura if you are interested. (604) 590-6187.

Sunshine Coast bus trip. The ladies went on an outing on Monday, June 20. We hope that everyone had a wonderful day.

DHARMA SCHOOL NEWS - Genevieve Iwata

As we look forward to the summer break, we will be busy helping to make sure that the Centennial Celebration will go well. We hope you will all be able to attend this once in a lifetime event.

Please feel free to join us when we picnic with the other temples at Central Park, Burnaby (South west corner - west of pitch and putt) on July 24th. It is a good time to meet with members of the other temples and renew acquaintances.

We hope you all have a wonderful and safe summer. We will be holding Family Services again from September 11th, 2005. See you then.
